West African inspired restaurant Chishuru comes to Brixton

Published 17 August 2020

Good news for Brixton as chef Adejoké Bakare, winner of the amateur category in last year’s Brixton Kitchen contest, is launching her own restaurant there. Originally established as a supperclub, Chishuru marks the brand’s first standalone restaurant.

Born in Nigeria, Bakare, known as Joké, wants to showcase both the classic and lesser-known dishes of West African cuisine – food which impressed the competition’s judges Jackson Boxer, James Cochran and Claire Ptak. By recreating the food she grew up with, the chef hopes to make the region’s food more accessible to people unfamiliar with the ingredients and spices.

Guests can expect a seasonal and changing menu, priced at £28 for four courses.

Snacks include Ekru, ground blackbeans and tasted Egusi seed flower with pumpkin seed pesto, whilst the grill section features whole snapper and goat ayamase – slow cooked goat shoulder with spiced green sauce.

The 25-cover restaurant opens on 27 August on Thursday to Sunday. For more information, follow the Instagram page here
