Bringing a taste of West Africa to London, we’re excited to finally have an opening date for Akoko nearly a year after we first heard about it. Launching on Fitzrovia’s Berners Street this October, the restaurant aims to showcase the still relatively unknown cuisine of West Africa, combining local ingredients with authentic aromas and spices.
The food will be inspired by founder Aji Akokomi’s travels across West Africa and family recipes. He will work alongside head chef JM Chilila, finalist in last year’s Masterchef: The Professionals, to create dishes which pay homage to the country’s culinary heritage by using traditional cooking techniques and recipes passed down through generations.
Akoko, translated as ‘time’ and ‘the first’ in Yoruba, will emphasise seasonality and sustainability throughout its menu. Diners can expect West African classics such as smoked goat with jollof rice and pounded yam with native lobster egusi, as well as desserts including goat milk ice cream with caramelised Ghanaian cocoa butter. Wines have been chosen by sommelier Honey Spencer and business partner Ania Smelskaya of Silo.
Designed by René Dekker Design, the interiors replicate the simplicity and beauty of West African rural areas, featuring terracotta clay walls, contemporary African art by Niyi Olagunju and mid-century pottery.
Akoko opens for soft launch with 50% off food from 25 September to 8 October. For bookings or more information, visit the website here
