What the new national lockdown means for hospitality

It doesn’t seem like long along we were writing this for the first – and then the second – time, but last night it was announced we are entering another national lockdown. With new rule changes brings new restrictions, so here we break down what the new national lockdown means for hospitality businesses. 

The few areas still in Tier 2 will see the most notable change, as all restaurants, bars and pubs are forced to shut their doors once more. For the majority of areas that were already in Tier 4, it doesn’t seem like much will change. 

There is now a stay at home order, but you are still able to leave your house for basic necessities including food. Restaurants are still able to remain open for takeaway, click & collect and delivery, however the sale of alcohol is now banned from restaurants and pubs (excluding delivery). Essential shops can remain open, including food shops, supermarkets, off-licences and market stalls selling essential retail. 

You cannot leave your home or the place where you are living for holidays or overnight stays – so holidays in the UK are off the table – but hotels and B&Bs may remain open for specific purposes including to accommodate people who are self-isolating, moving house or live in a hotel or B&B. International travel is only allowed when you have a legally permitted reason to leave home. 

This morning it was announced that businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors will receive up to £9,000 in one-off grants. To find out more about what your business is eligible for or to apply, click here.

The new lockdown is due to last to at least the middle of February, but Boris Johnson suggested that it is likely to continue until March. We’ll keep you updated when anything changes.
