The rise and rise of dark and delivery-only kitchen suggests they’re here to stay, and the latest to launch is Empire Biryani, from the team behind the brilliant Gunpowder. The idea, which launches next Thursday, is inspired by founders Harneet Baweja and Davina Seth’s memories of India.
The menu – which feels right for a special occasion – will centre on the signature North Indian biryani. The dishes are made fresh each morning and topped with shortcrust pastry and spices after 36-hour preparation, Baweja says, “I’m delighted to be able to deliver one of my favourite dishes from back home to Londoners.” There’s a choice of lamb shank or slow cooked mushroom – and there’s a sharing size to feed up to four people.
No biryani is complete without sides, so expect pickled cauliflower and potatoes, pepper chicken, paneer butter masala and raita. Not entirely authentic but delicious-sounding is a triple chocolate brownie with cardamom custard for dessert.
Same-day delivery is available within six miles of the restaurant – but the team has also created two DIY feasting kits for pre-order delivery including a biryani, two side dishes and dessert for those further afield.
