The three week countdown to reopening has nearly started. In the meantime, we’ll share the best things the CODE team ate at home each week.
Whilst I love fried chicken (don’t we all) even just the idea of flouring, breading and frying my own makes me weary. So, I was delighted to grab one of the new Chick n’ Sours meal kits before the first drop sold out. A light bit of frying is required but its mainly an assembly job and is exceptionally fun. The K-pop burger was crazy good but those Kung Pao Wings… damn.

This might be a case of leave the best till (nearly) last… The Clove Club has just got into the meal-kit game and while its At Home menu is at a higher price point, it is really is worth it. The five-course menu starts with snacks that exemplify what Isaac McHale does at The Clove Club – rich, airy ricotta and cods roe emulsion with hemp crackers, crudites, and Ogleshield puffs. Hot smoked trout, a lentil velouté with veal and truffle, scallops baked in brioche and featherblade of beef followed, then a sheeps milk yoghurt mousse and three different petit fours. The food is spectacular and delicious – but the care and detail that have gone into the packaging and presentation is amazing too. Isaac told me it took him a long time and a lot of effort to get it just right. Bravo team, can’t wait to hear what’s next.

I’ve just moved house and in honour of my new food delivery radius I ordered Gökyüzü twice in the first six days. The first time it was a halloumi wrap about a foot long and the weight of a small baby, stuffed full of fresh parsley and a sumac-laden salad. The second time, a huge chicken doner accompanied by salad, rice, bulgur and pillowy lavash bread in a portion generous enough for two, even without the extra chips smothered in their excellent chili sauce and garlic sauce. Delicious.

I felt a great sense of excitement and a touch of escapism when heading to London Bridge for lunch last week. Whilst Flat Iron Square remains closed, Bar Douro has launched its new spin off, Roulote, offering grab-and-go Portuguese sandwiches and having had them before on holiday I was keen to try. From the simple menu I went for the classic Bifana – think tender, thinly sliced pork poached in a white wine and Massa de Pimentão (fermented pepper sauce) served in pillowy Carcaças bread with savora mustard mayonnaise. I can safely say it went down exceptionally fast.

I’ve been seriously missing proper sushi recently (please, no more of that supermarket stuff.) So I thought, why wait until restaurants are open, when I can pick up Sticks ‘n’ Sushi and enjoy it at home? Sure, the experience isn’t quite the same, but the sushi is still almost perfect. Bowls of edamame, truffle cauliflower, salmon sashimi and plates of ebi kit, avocado maki and tuna tartare filled a sushi shaped hole in stomach and my heart. CODE members, check your app for a special offer on Sticks ‘n’ Sushi takeaway.
