From Carazon to a Calçotada feast, here’s everything the CODE team loved in the week lockdown lifted.
The Calçotada is a Catalan tradition that centres around the humble Calçot. Having been to the last couple of celebrations at Tapas Brindisa Shoreditch, I was relieved to discover they’d created a special Calçotada feast available on Restaurant Kits. We opted for the vegan option, and enjoyed 12 Calçots and romesco sauce, all the ingredients for some flavourful bomba rice, a creamy mushroom and bean stew, mojo rojo potatoes and escalivada.

Firm ramen favourite Bone Daddies has added a new concept to their ever-growing empire: Wing Daddies, which is currently operating as a delivery only service in Kentish Town, but will be expanding to all 13 Bone Daddies’ sites across London after a successful launch period. The menu is (as the name suggests) centered around chicken wings (my fave were the honey BBQ version), but the cheese and chicken skin tater tots were equally as epic. And to keep the junk food-related guilt at bay, the green chilli mayo slaw is a great addition, too.

The transformation of a few vac packed bags to a full blown feast is highly satisfying and something Restaurant Kits have really nailed. Courtesy of their Corazon box, last Friday was Mexican night with beautiful chipotle marinated hangar steak tacos with fresh and spicy salsa and citrus mojo. Add in a couple of margaritas and it’s almost like being back in the Soho restaurant.

Kricket is another name on the list of independent restaurants who’ve joined the Restaurant Kits ranks – and their DIY butter chicken kit (available on the April menu) is one of the best I’ve tried so far. Super easy to put together, the kit comes with tandoori chicken, ghee pilau rice and tarka dal, as well as a couple of black pepper papads which – if you’re also a deep fryer-phobe – can be cooked in a dry pan in just a couple of minutes. And better still, CODE members get 10% off all Restaurant Kits via the CODE app.

I never thought that being able to grab a takeaway and sit outside to eat it would feel like such a luxury, but it felt like getting ready for a special occasion as the ‘stay at home’ rule lifted this week. Heading back to one of my local favourites in Cambridge, I got the classic Doppel burger from plant-based (but you wouldn’t know it) burger restaurant Doppleganger. The patty is topped with caramelised onion marmalade, portobello mushrooms, homemade ranch sauce and an actually realistic vegan cheese. A burger and sunshine? Heaven.
