The team here are big fans of speciality coffee roasters and Friends of CODE Allpress Espresso, so we were interested to see the news over the weekend that after three decades, the business is moving in a new direction. In an announcement on Allpress’ Instagram page, founder Michael Allpress announced that the business has been sold to leading Australian drinks company Asahi Beverages Group.
“After 33 years of roasting coffee, the time is right for Tony and I to sell our business and I am excited to announce we have found a great new home in Asahi Beverages,” says Allpress. “Over three decades of running Allpress has been a life-changing journey for me personally, but I haven’t done it alone. There are many exciting times ahead for our people, customers and coffee drinks around the world.”
The business was founded in New Zealand in 1989, later expanding into Australia, Japan, Singapore and of course the UK, where it has sites in Dalston and Shoreditch. Allpress now sells more than 1,500 tones of coffee beans each year, equating to around 120 million cups (that’s a lot of coffee).
We’re pleased to see that the values and culture at Allpress will continue long after the business is sold. The team at Asahi Beverages note that the jobs of more than 240 full-time employees are safe, and Michael Allpress will remain as an ambassador. Day to day operations won’t change, so it’s business as usual at the roasters.
