The Connaught will on Wednesday unveil its first new bar in over a decade. The Red Room, the hotel said, is “an homage to extraordinary female artists, with a meticulously curated collection of works in red forming the perfect canvas for rare vintages by the glass and small plates”.
Equipped with a Coravin and access to one of London’s most extensive and historic wine cellars, the 50-cover bar will sit behind a velvet curtain, just off The Connaught’s well-tended Champagne room, and will be open between Wednesday and Saturday from 4pm until midnight.
Rare and fine vintages will be the focus in The Red Room, with a 1994 Petrus and a 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru both on the list, as well as a 2011 Richebourg Grand Cru from the famous Burgundy estate Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. They are drinks to nourish Hélène Darroze’s now three Michelin-starred restaurant down the hall, and might be served on one of the custom-built trolleys, which have been designed to carry decanters.
Artwork has been chosen by the hotel’s co-owner, Patrick McKillen. He picked five key pieces, including two original from French-American artist Louise Bourgeois. Bryan O’Sullivan, who was behind the Painter’s Room in Claridge’s, designed the bar.
