Seafood restaurant Roe has sadly announced via Instagram that it completed its last service at Pop Brixton on Saturday 30 November. The restaurant has been based at Pop Brixton for the past year.
Roe served a mix of British sustainable seafood dishes using local produce, with Irish influences from head chef and owner Simon Whiteside’s heritage. Whiteside, previously of Hook in Camden, created dishes such as the signature cuttlefish & ink arancini with pecorino foam, squid noodles with fermented hot sauce and grilled baby octopus with miso emulsion (as pictured below).
Pop Brixton was initially intended as a temporary project to redevelop an unused brown field site and transform it into a space for local and independent businesses. Now home to over 55 independent businesses, it has been open for two years and will remain so until mid to late 2020. However Roe are not the only restaurant in Pop Brixton moving on, with their neighbour Smoke & Salt also currently crowdfunding to find their next site.
The team behind Roe have not yet confirmed whether they will be relocating to a new site, but have urged fans to keep following them on their journey. Their statement on Instagram read ‘we’re sad to say that Saturday was our last service here in Roe! We have loved running the restaurant for our year in Pop Brixton and even though we’re not going to be in Brixton anymore, we hope you’ll continue to follow us to see where the future takes us! A huge thank you to everyone who supported us over the last year, especially all our lovely customers and our incredible team, past and present! We couldn’t have done it without you.’
