Tomorrow, we will announce our annual 30 under 30 list.
We publish this list both to shine a light on these individuals who are doing amazing things, and to fly the flag for hospitality as a desirable career path. Now more than ever, we have to showcase this to the coming generations.
Every year when we put this list together, I’m not only reminded of what you can achieve in hospitality at such a young age but also the sheer diversity of opportunities in our industry. The perception of working in hospitality in this country is something we urgently need to work on as, if we’re being honest, it’s dire. It’s not seen as an aspirational, exciting, well-paid career with a huge array of opportunities. Yet we all know that actually it can be and often is – it’s the greatest industry in the world.
Ask a kid about working in a restaurant and they probably have nightmarish images of sweary, scary kitchens or crappy underpaid shifts out on the floor. They’re unlikely to be aware that working in hospitality could mean designing a restaurant, working on a venue’s financials, curating a venue’s wine list… the opportunities are endless.
As my colleague Chloë Hamilton, who led this year’s 30 under 30 judging process, says, “looking beyond the most established names to find the new stars of hospitality has been a refreshing exercise. The industry is renowned for supporting creative talent no matter how young you are, and we’re here to celebrate those people on the land, in the studio, on the floor and in the kitchen who are moving fastest and reaching furthest.”
The full list of 30 under 30 2022 will be go live tomorrow morning at 9am online, on social and in your inbox. And to celebrate this year’s list, for the month of February, we’re offering anyone under 30 a special CODE membership price.
