Ampéli is to become the latest Charlotte Street opening in January. Founded by Jenny Pagan, Ampèli will be a modern wine-focused restaurant serving Greek and eastern Mediterranean dishes, accompanied by a list of wines from across the Greek mainland and its islands. Ampéli is set across three floors, with a wine bar, mezzanine and more intimate dining space, totalling 80 covers.
Having previously worked at Nopi and Tel Aviv’s acclaimed restaurant Toto, Oren Goldfeld will lead the kitchen. Goldfeld and Pagan have worked closely together to bring her favourite Greek dishes to London. The menu is designed to encourage sharing over a glass of wine, featuring dishes such as feta saganaki with tomato jam and okra and goat’s cheese fritters. A selection of Mediterranean dishes will also be on offer, including braised cuttlefish with orzo and Moroccan red pepper sauce and spiced potato Brik with soft egg yolk.
The wine list has been put together by Greek master of wine Yiannis Karakasis. Designed to shine the light on modern Greek wines, the wine list champions native and dynamic producers from emerging wine regions across Greece. There will also be a ‘discoveries’ section, with rare Greek wines produced in very small quantities.
On the opening, Pagan says “After moving to London in 2004, I found that what I missed most about my home in Athens was the food and wines. My grandmother is an amazing cook and a wonderful host, and good food shared with friends and family has been a part of my life since childhood. Greek wine is currently undergoing an exciting renaissance so I’m really looking forward to introducing some completely new wines to London.”
Ampéli will open on 15 January at 18 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 2LZ
