As we get ready to launch CODE’s 30 under 30 class of 2022/23, we hear from CODE founder Adam Hyman on why celebrating the industry’s rising stars is so necessary.
Astronaut! Police officer! Teacher! Footballer! Remember primary school, when your teacher would ask what you wanted to be when you grew up? I’m sure most of us didn’t end up in the profession we shouted out so enthusiastically, but I’ve always found the subject of ambition so fascinating.
Parents and teachers have a huge influence on the futures of those entrusted to them. Role models, too. Passion can be ignited so readily at a young age. But as an adult, the same thing can happen – even reading about a role might stir something up in the imagination. For me, it was when I first read about Nick Jones and Soho House. The year was 2009 and Dean Street Townhouse, in Soho, was on the way.
On Wednesday, we are set to publish our annual 30 under 30 list, which celebrates the rising stars of hospitality. This will be our seventh, and looking back over the years I was reminded of why we do it. Not only is the list designed to reward those who do amazing things, it is a calling card to those who are yet to work out what they want to do with their lives. 30 under 30 is to inspire as it is to champion.
Education is incredibly important, and while I would never discourage someone from college, university or similar, academia isn’t for everyone. It has a tendency to pigeon-hole and it’s important to remember individuals are suited to different paths. The making of a brilliant, inspirational, and rewarding career is not reliant on a degree.
Enter hospitality. One of the reasons why I love it so much is that it is free of societal trappings: a person’s background or upbringing is entirely irrelevant. Hospitality is an industry that has its doors wide open for everyone. The barrier to entry is gorgeously low and you can climb the ranks quickly – there are not many other industries like that. For me it was an outlet where I could be myself.
During a difficult time for hospitality, we have to find a way to move forward. And even if times were rosier, we should always be looking to promote hospitality as a potential career to young people across Britain. I can think of no better role models than the 30 people in this year’s list.
CODE’s 30 under 30 class of 2022/23 list will be announced on Wednesday 7 December.
