It’s hardly an anniversary worth celebrating but next week marks a year since we entered the first national lockdown. After three lockdowns, a confusing tier system and 12 months of uncertainty, there’s now just 22 days to go until we’re able to enjoy proper hospitality again.
Until then, we’ll be busy making the most of the brilliant offerings our industry friends have created over the past year. This week we’ve put together a selection of some of the team’s favourite offers on the CODE app for a great Saturday night in.
I think it’s safe to say that after a year of lockdown limbos the ‘Saturday night in’ has lost a little of its charm. As anticipation rises for the 12th April, the idea of another evening of ‘what haven’t we watched on Netflix’ seems hair-pullingly dull, but if there’s one thing to carry me through it’s ordering a 20-inch Homeslice pizza to take home and enjoy whilst slouched on the sofa. In my eyes, with a pizza that large you’ve got to go half & half, so for me it’s the Nduja alongside the Neal’s Yard Dairy 4 cheese with jalapeño salsa & rye crumb. Admittedly by the last delicious slice, I can’t help but find myself feeling the teeniest bit grateful for another night in…

Having had to cook pretty much solidly for the last 52 Saturdays, it’s safe to say I’m always looking for some inspiration for the next meal. This week it came in the form of a beautiful 20% off from Natoora online and, although deviating from my usual Oddbox felt weird, I’m really glad I did. Wild garlic, a cute Delica pumpkin, Monk’s Beard, cime di rapa, Marinda tomatoes, Tropea onions and some Dorstone goat’s cheese all arrived on Saturday morning looking fresh and vibrant. After much deliberation, we roasted the pumpkin with sage, and over the top sprinkled the pumpkin’s seeds, some Aleppo pepper and the goat’s cheese. Perfect.

Since I moved to London in 2014 Gelupo has consistently been my go-to late-night snack whenever I’m in Soho. It is, in my humble opinion, by far the best gelato in London. You can imagine my joy, then, when Gelupo (the little sister of much-loved Bocca di Lupo) started delivering their gelato around London last year. Ricotta and sour cherry or bitter chocolate are my two favourites, but you can’t go wrong with their pistachio or hazelnut either. An absolute must for a lockdown night in.

As the one-year anniversary of lockdown hits I realise my days making rosemary gimlets at David Lebovitz’s Apero Hour and stirring negronis like Stanley Tucci are long gone. And whilst I’m sure I’ll be back on the booze when I come out of hibernation, I’ve been particularly enjoying Rare Tea Co’s loose leaf selection. I love the earthy South African Rooibos and the Chinese whole leaf green tea but to round off a wild Saturday night in, the silver tip jasmine tea is something of a small but very pleasing treat.
