Two minutes with Lorraine Abrahams, Ampéli

Published 29 January 2020

For our latest Careers Q&A we chat to Lorraine Abrahams, general manager of newly opened Mediterranean restaurant Ampéli. She tells us how hospitality is in her veins, where she had her last great meal and her advice to those starting out in the industry.

Where and how did you get your start?

Hospitality is in my veins, my mother was a manager for a Jewish catering company, so for years whilst I was at school and college, I would go to work for her. My true start came when I returned from travelling. I managed to get a job as a waitress at John Torode’s SOS (Smiths of Smithfield) in Farringdon. I was promoted to assistant manager within 6 months.

Sum up your current work life in one sentence.

Intense, but in a good way.

Who has been really influential on your career and why?

I have to say, my first ever manager Paul Robinson Webster. He is probably one of the most professional people that I have had the pleasure to work with. He has such a calm nature and an unrivalled elegance.

What’s next for you?

Retirement, but not for many years…

What’s your one piece of advice to someone starting out?

Don’t enter the industry unless you are truly passionate about hospitality, and have a genuine desire to make people happy.

Where did you last have a great meal?

Rochelle Canteen, I love that place, i’ve been going there for years, it’s very much my go to place. I always find something that I love on their ever changing menu.

Are there any openings you are looking forward to?

Patron Cave à Manger

Where is the most exciting city for hospitality (aside from London)?

Barcelona

Who would you identify as a rising star?

Yasmin Godfrey
