CODE has always been a huge cheerleader for Asma Khan and was as disappointed as her many fans when she announced the closure of Darjeeling Express. However her next move has us excited. Khan, who was the first UK figure to feature on Chef’s Table, has just confirmed that the restaurant is moving on to bigger things in Covent Garden, taking over Carluccio’s 120-cover flagship site on Garrick Street.
Scheduled to open in mid-October, the site, three times the size of the Kingly Court site, will feature a restaurant, open for dinner only, alongside a deli. Three eight-course tasting menus will be on offer: a biryani tasting menu, a Calcutta to Darjeeling menu and a vegan tasting menu.
Speaking to Eater London about the menu, Khan revealed “all the courses on all three menus will be served with roti/rice, as is the tradition. There is nothing progressive or modern in our menu. It’s heritage traditional recipes served in small quantities so the diner can be taken on a journey of spice.”
With a larger kitchen, Khan hopes to offer more opportunity and support women into senior leadership roles in the industry through a mentorship school.”
Our new home will allow us to train and prepare women of all backgrounds into restaurant owners, managers and chief executives” says Khan. “I will use our new Covent Garden restaurant to open doors to those who are under-represented in our industry.” Hear, hear, we say.
