Eagle eyed Bulletin subscribers will have already spotted the big news from Big Mamma this week. We recently spoke to co-founder Victor Lugger about launching payment service Sunday and continuing to innovate throughout the last year, and now the team is launching a third London site. Ave Mario will launch on 25 June on Henrietta Street in Covent Garden.
The restaurant will be huge, 295 covers and 7,000 sq ft, and will have a traditional osteria feel. As you’d expect from Big Mamma, it will be somewhat over the top. There is two terraces and a vast dining room upstairs, as well as an indoor courtyard area and 3,500 bottles at the bar. Head downstairs and guests will find a mirrored basement with lowered kitchen, complete with counter dining to watch the chefs at work.
The menu at Ave Mario will feature a broad range of Italian dishes in a kitchen led by head chef who’s just 23, but don’t expect any of the Big Mamma classics. Instead, there is dishes included carbonara ravioli, ‘the pillowiest pizza you will ever eat’ (their words, not ours) and 60cm tall Stracciatella ice cream cake to finish.
