Many of our news stories in the past year – as well as our Lockdown Heroes list back in September – have focused on how the hospitality industry has come together to support others despite its own difficulties. So it’s no surprise that many in the hospitality sector were recognised in The Community Awards of Mayfair & St James’s this year.
Organised by the Mayfair Times, the awards aim to celebrate “the creativity, ingenuity and community spirit of two of London’s most historic districts.” This year, it was important to shine the light on those making a difference in the community, from helping those in need to maintaining a positive presence. Ewan Venters, Angela Hartnett, and Jeremy King were among the judges.
The COVID Hero award went to Claridge’s for offering free accommodation to key workers during lockdown and daily packaged meals for NHS staff, while Richard Corrigan picked up the Only in Mayfair Award for his role in Mayfair’s food scene and support for the community. Similarly, Only in St James’s was won by Dukes Bar for “its expert service and elegance.”
It was The Dorchester’s head chef Tom Booton – one of CODE’s 30 under 30 alumni – who was awarded the Bright Young Thing category, celebrating young talent in the area. Meanwhile, a regular on CODE’s 100 most influential women in hospitality list, it’s no surprise that Angela Hartnett was awarded the Hospitality Hero award for her work campaigning for the industry.
We wrote about Queen’s of Mayfair when it first opened, so it’s good to see it win best Commercial Newcomer, and finally Le Adorno – who joined Le Caprice’s front of house team in 1981 and later became director – won the Lifetime Achievement award.
CODE congratulates all the winners, and everyone in the hospitality industry quietly continuing to support others through this difficult time.
