Becca Europe
Former Gerber founder Tanya Layzell-Payne has been appointed managing director of Becca Europe, the new transatlantic branch of one of America’s leading hospitality marketing firms. The role, based in Covent Garden, has been introduced so the group is able to better work and connect with businesses in the UK and Europe, while supporting European brands expanding into the United States. Tanya, who has worked with the likes of JKS, Simon Rogan and Angela Hartnett, said: ‘The strategic opportunity for UK and European brands lies in breaking into the US, one of the world’s most valuable and diverse markets.’ Becca was founded by Becca Parrish in 2004. She has listed Ruthie Rogers and Eric Ripert among her clients.
The Dreamery
Goodbye Horses has proved to be a likely hit in Islington and now co-founders Alex Young and George de Vos are ready to launch their eagerly awaited ice cream shop. The Dreamery will open on December 5 in an ‘otherworldly space’ in De Beauvoir, not far from the wine bar and restaurant and their coffee shop, Day Trip. Ice cream flavours will include Christmas pudding, croissant and custard, and mint choc chip. ‘It’s Christmas, and what better time to open an ice cream shop?’ said Young and de Vos.
Small Plates
AngloThai is a late contender for one of London’s restaurant openings of the year; John and Desiree Chantarasak’s Marylebone venue is years in the making. On the menu, oysters with sea buckthorn and fermented chilli, Brixham crab with caviar and coconut ash crackers, and Hebridean hogget massaman curry.
Rockfish founder Mitch Tonks has taken on the former site of Mark Hix’s Oyster and Fish House in Lyme Regis. Hix will close his restaurant after 16 years of trading next month, after which a branch of Rockfish will open. ‘Although I will be sad to see The Oyster & Fish House close next month, I do feel the time is right, and I cannot think of a better fit than Rockfish to take its place,’ said Hix.
Thomas Straker, ‘the bad-boy TikTok chef’, has hit New York. Fresh from serving flatbreads to the Beckhams, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nick Cave, reported The Times, Straker had breakfast at Keith McNally’s hotspot Baltazar before starting a five-day residency at Ella Funt, Lounes Mazouz’s bistro in the East Village. Permanent NYC restaurant soon?
More restaurant merch: Brick Lane’s famed Beigel Bake has released a football shirt to mark its 50th anniversary. The shirt, denoting the shop’s iconic white signage, also features its postcode, E1, in a retro style. ‘We’re proud to mark 50 years serving Londoners and visitors from across the world,’ said manager Nathan Cohen.
Farmers are to gather outside Downing Street at 11am on Tuesday to peacefully protest the government’s changes to inheritance tax. There are fears the increased taxation could push small- and medium-sized farmers out of business, many of which supply Britain’s best pubs and restaurants, and up to 12,000 farmers could attend the rally.
