The leading Stockport chef Sam Buckley has finally launched his much-anticipated bakery, pottery and sometime snack bar Yellowhammer. The Where The Light Gets In restaurant founder opened on Saturday alongside baker Rosie Wilkes and ceramicist Joe Hartley, in a space occupying the ground floor of 15 Lower Hillgate in Stockport’s old town.
Each component at Yellowhammer has been designed to work in synergy: the pottery will provide cups and plates for the bakery, while the bakery will sell a selection of ceramics. ‘Both new projects are united by a shared set of values, with a focus on thoughtful sourcing of materials and low-tech production methods’, said the team. Buckley said the bakery takes its name from a ‘striking woodland songbird’, known for its distinctive, ‘a little bit of bread and no cheeeeese’ call.
Perhaps visitors will buy more than a little of the sourdough, rye, baguettes and buns on offer. Also for sale will be hot sandwiches, toasties, charcuterie and produce sourced from Buckley’s The Landing, his sprawling kitchen garden (Buckley doesn’t really like this term… sorry mate) constructed in lockdown on the roof of a nearby car park.
