We all hope we can visit restaurants again soon, but in the meantime we’ll be sharing our favourite at-home kits and takeaways for you to try each week.
Ever since the Big Mamma Group arrived in London from Paris with their instant-hit Gloria in Shoreditch, followed by Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia, they’ve added a bit of camp and glam to the London restaurant scene. If Ryan Murphy did restaurants… And now to battle with the current situation our industry faces they’ve launched Napoli Gang delivering their food around town. Ragu arancini, burrata, truffle pizza and a big slice of lemon meringue pie – hard to beat.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I ran downstairs with delight to deliver the news to my family that Dishoom had arrived in Cambridge. Marking its second delivery-only kitchen outside of the capital, I couldn’t wait to try it out a couple of days after it launched. Expecting long waiting times, I was very happy to be proven wrong when the food arrived speedily – and equally happy to be proven right when it was just as great as I expected. It’s a slimmed down menu, but there’s more than enough to get your fill. We enjoyed generous portions of vegetable samosas, chicken ruby, chickpea chole, garlic naan and bowls of greens. Plus, the mango lassi is a personal favourite.

Popping into Ngon Vietnamese deli on Chiswick High Road, it’s hard to describe how much joy I got from two friendly faces (behind masks of course) greeting me with genuine hospitality. A stark contrast to the now all too familiar helmet-sporting delivery drivers. This week we went old school and picked up the phone to order a takeaway for collection. With no delivery fee or commission, it’s amazing how far your money can stretch – fresh summer rolls, a fiery papaya salad, sticky bbq pork and probably the best chicken pho I’ve had outside Vietnam. We ordered far too much, but it was all so great that we accidentally ate the lot. All that was left was to crawl to the sofa to bask in our glorious food coma and binge through more episodes than we should probably admit of Schitt’s Creek.

Born in 2019 in Norwich, Vegan Dough Co has made it’s way to London to meet the ever-growing demand for genuinely great vegan alternatives. Their at-home pizza kits are super quick to prepare and need just a few minutes in the oven to cook (bonus points for minimal faffing and minimal washing up). We tried the ‘godfather pizza’ kit, which came with vegan nduja, broccolini, olives and vegan mozzarella (the kind that actually melts). Ideal for those still soldiering on with Veganuary. And better still, CODE members get 10% off when placing an order through Restaurant Kits (see app for more details).

As the winner of ‘Best no low wine or wine alternative’ at the Imbibe No & Low awards 2020, we were certainly intrigued to try the latest offering from REAL Kombucha. REAL offer two flavours – the ‘Royal Flush’, which is produced from first flush Darjeeling with hints of rhubarb and white peach and the ‘Dry Dragon’ – a light and citrussy zinger made from pan roasted green tea from Zhejiang, China. Both kombuchas were so refreshing and can be paired in place of a sparkling or dry white wine. Despite Dry Jan (and the snow!), we felt like we were on holiday. A proper grown up Kombucha with all the flavour, and no hangover.

Mitch Tonks has the reputation for finding the best fish and seafood in the south-west and cooking it beautifully at his restaurants. So getting a Rockfish box is a brilliant treat for those craving sparklingly fresh, delicious fish. My collection included turbot tranches which were divine simply cooked, scallops (and their well-scrubbed shells) for a sexy gratin, smoked salmon and all the best condiments. It kept me going for days and there’s the bonus of seasonal sardines in tins (yes, fresher is better!)
