From EggRun to East Linton, here are the best things the CODE team ate this week
Not a crazy-golf regular myself, I was excited to get my game on at Swingers in the West End. The night teed off to a great start with a couple of Pizza Pilgrims SLICE’s and more than a couple margaritas which helped to keep my spirits up even after losing quite spectacularly. Its safe to say I’m no pro but it was a very merry evening and I’m already planning my return for rematch.

After a day swimming and kayaking at the beach in a remarkably hot and sunny Scotland, we wandered into town for a bite to eat. My friends (who recently moved to the area) had spotted a nice pub that they liked the look of last time they were passing through. So, we ended up out the front at The Bonnie Badger – run by Tom & Michaela Kitchin (aka Scottish hospitality legends). Having educated them that this was in fact rather more than just a ‘nice pub’, I smugly tucked into a fantastic fish pie, before having a nosey around the restaurant space (a beautiful high-ceilinged space in the old stables), and leaving with a note to book in for dinner next time I’m in town.

The restaurant bar is made for the solo diner. In front of you, the expanse of the kitchen is a new realm, and you are part of the chef’s brigade. Eating tapas, an inherently sociable ritual, feels enhanced. At Barrafina on Dean Street, the ebb and flow of business was taking. I launched into an order-as-you-go regime that carried me through to the day’s specials. With a mood invigorated by the quick step of waiters and the warmth of red wine, I tried everything: the gentle Buñuelos de Bacalao, the crunchy Chipirones, a plate circled with Paletilla Ibérica de Bellota, Natoora’s creamy Bull Heart Tomato, savoury Veal Tongue with the higher notes of scattered herbs, then manchego and sherry to finish.

The smell from Bostock Bakery in East Linton has rather an impressive range – it ensnared me twice in three days for a morning pastry fix as I cycled through the surrounding countryside. The wholesale bakery in a former car showroom fortunately also has a customer facing café boasting a mouth-watering display of fresh pastries and bread. This is a very fine bakery indeed – the sausage roll and this almond bostock (see pic) in particular are dangerously moreish.

Sitting street side in Monument we enjoyed a lovely lunch break in the sun at new grab and go concept Eggrun. A traditionalist at heart I always believe the classics are the best. Here this is ‘The Eggrun’ – a pillowy brioche bun filled with silky scrambled eggs, caramelised onions, cheddar, chives and their delicious secret sauce. If you’re wanting to push the boat out with something a little more boujie the cheeseburger with fried egg and truffle sauce is the one for you.
