As we face the coming heat this weekend, the CODE team have brought a culinary display. Whether it’s soft serve in Ealing or a weekend lunch spot in Mayfair, here are the best things the CODE team ate this week
They’ve been dominating the northern hospitality scene with their take on Neapolitan pizza and Rudy’s has now come to London. Located in the former Wahaca site on Wardour Street, they’re not short of competition in the area with Pizza Pilgrims and Franco Manca both close by but with pizzas starting from £6 and a spacious room for groups – they’ll do well down south too.

One of my all time favourite restaurants in London. The original Cecconi’s in Mayfair works brilliantly for all times of the day – whether it’s for an espresso and pastry in the morning, a plate of pasta for lunch or a veal Milanese for dinner. And last Sunday, even though it never ended up coming home, it was the ideal spot for a pre-match meal of vitello tonnato and lobster spaghetti.

This was my first trip to Northern Ireland, and after a week’s cycling we needed something quick, easy but most importantly delicious. Pizza Punks make handmade sourdough pizza (double fermented for 48 hours apparently) and serve an array of colourful, original cocktails. We opted for the truffle pizza, which was a combination of mushroom and rosemary potatos as well as a pumpkin cream, beetroot and goat cheese classic.

Three brothers cooking at a 10-seater counter dining restaurant in Soho makes for a good story. Luckily the play is as good as the plot. Zoe and Layo Paskin opened their pub/wine bar/ restaurant next door to Palomar and last year cleverly brought on Luke Selby and his brother Nat and Theo to head up Evelyn’s Table. An intimate experience that sees a monthly revolving menu based around British produce, Japanese techniques and classic French training. Encore.

Jerdan Place in Fulham is currently book-ended by two large boarded up sites (formerly Cote and Evans Cycles). Neither of them made it through the pandemic, but fortunately there are signs that life is returning. Honi Poke recently opened to join another lockdown addition – British burger joint Foxden (which, in true neighbourly spirit, was recommended to me by Becky of Becky Blooms Flowers across the road). It seems like it is largely catering to the takeaway/delivery crowd but has a couple of nice tables out the front, and the burgers are really rather delicious – super juicy and served in a proper bun.

Hands-down the best thing to happen to Ealing in 2020 was the arrival of Ealing Grocer, Andy Harris’ haven for foodies and chefs living in London’s leafiest suburb. The shop stocks a curated assortment of the best produce and ingredients Andy has come across as a food and travel writer, magazine editor and a truly accomplished cook. After hearing he’d acquired a soft serve machine and was consulting with London and Italy’s top ice cream/gelato/sorbet aficionados to perfect his creations, I had to try. Flavours change very regularly and I was so pleased to catch this one – made using gorgeous Honeymoon Melons from Italy – full of flavour and perfect for a sunny walk in Walpole Park.

I hadn’t stepped foot in Sabor for a very long time and you’d be forgiven in thinking that the past 18-months hadn’t happened based on last Thursday’s experience. A warm welcome from José at the entrance, a wave and smile from Nieves behind the counter and a buzzy restaurant at 12.20pm full of happy punters. The food only seems to have got better too – the octopus and potatoes dish was a perfect warm up before getting on a plane to Mallorca for the weekend.
