I’ve recently moved to West London so was eager to visit The Chelsea Pig, excited about the prospects that this could be a new regular in my area. I can confirm, it will be. On arrival you’re greeted by a colossal water tank with an old-school diver suit stood in the centre, watching over the Timothy Oulton designed dining room. Menu favourites included the beetroot cured salmon and the marinated scallops. I hear the Sunday roast is fantastic – perhaps I’ll try it this weekend…

If you’re a fan of noodles (who isn’t), and specifically udon noodles, Marugame Udon is for you. I’d call it a quick eats kind of place but that doesn’t mean you can’t hang around. We certainly did and were even tempted to go for a second round. It’s to the point – you walk in, grab a tray, choose your udon and then slide along to pick up some temura, sides and a drink. I’d recommend the kamaage but think next time might go for the chicken yaki or the two pork tonkotsu. TBC but I’ll be back for sure.

Three years after its opening, Chimac has found its place among the staple locations for casual diners in Dublin city centre. The everbright colours of the brand are the influence of co-founder Sofie Rooney and her background in marketing. Chimac is the mainstay of consumer-friendly food and immoderate flavours. Frosé, ice cream sandwiches and bulky chicken burgers with lots of sauce… It’s definitely so bad, it’s good.

‘Modern British with a Jamaican soul’ describes the food at Wood & Water in Brixton, from owner and former Miss Jamaica April Jackson after she transformed Three Birds Cafe last year. We tried goat croquettes, jerk butter carrots and (uber crispy) plantain fried in honey ginger glaze. Banana Bread is surely a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lockdown 1.0 national pastime, the dish so much more, with rum caramel, crême pat and dark chocolate. There’s a cosy neighbourhood vibe about the place and it’s pleasing that W&W feels ready to take on the ‘reliable stalwart’ moniker from its previous incarnation.
