All the pies, pizza, burgers, boxes and more the CODE team loved eating this week.
In what must be one of the most anticipated meal kits of this lockdown, Calum Franklin finally got into the delivery game, with Restuarant Kits. The twist? The pie had everything ready to go apart from the pastry, which the buyer must make from scratch! It’s great fun and there is a real sense of achievement from creating a lattice top, even if it isn’t as mathematically perfect as the ones that come out of the Holborn Dining Room kitchen. A tangy chicken and shiitake filling is complimented with slow-roasted carrots with cumin, and a generous helping of clapshot. Pie-tastic.

I’m not sure quite how or when it happened, but for some reason my go to pre-theatre meal is a cheeky Five Guys. Sadly, still no theatres to bring the West End back to life, but a random craving for one of life’s guilty pleasures nonetheless. A ‘little’ (i.e. just one patty. Otherwise known as a normal burger…) bacon cheeseburger, fries and an Oreo milkshake is my go-to.

I wasn’t aware of KakéSW3, a little chefs’ sushi bar that’s currently operating out of 31 Beauchamp Place, but now I’ve tasted their food I can’t wait to hear where they set up a permanent site after lockdown. The lunch box I got (thanks to Lakeland, who asked them to cater for a journalist’s lunch meeting over Zoom) was fantastic and used brilliant British produce like Cornish lobster and mackerel and seasonal treats such as Jerusalem artichoke and seasonal greens. Ordering an omakase bento box to be delivered very soon…

One of my last meals before COVID fully hit was squashed in at the bar at The Compton Arms hungrily working on the legendary Four Legs cheeseburger and their ridiculously good fried potatoes. There were proper pints to wash it down with and the buzz of the Liverpool v Atletico Madrid match on in the background. I’ve missed Four Legs a lot so wanted to investigate their cheeseburger pizza in collaboration with Yard Sale. It’s actually less OTT than it sounds – the crumbled burger patty, pickles, jalapeños and all the cheese make a lot of delicious sense.

Rather than delivering a meal kit with all the ingredients for a specific dish ready to go, Oma’s discovery box sends you high quality ingredients and encourages you to cook intuitively. Oma is partnering with a different chef for a different theme each month – first up was Native’s Ivan Tisdall-Downes exploring sustainability in food. My box for March was full with Tom Cenci’s favourite North American ingredients. Think maple syrup (pancakes, anyone?), Canadian wild rice and Old Bay seasoning. The box comes complete with recipe ideas and a deep dive into each ingredient and the producer behind them. A really fun idea to cook with ingredients you wouldn’t normally buy at the supermarket.

If you know Westcombe Dairy, which makes brilliant cheeses for many restaurants and consumers, then you (like me) will expect big things from their spin-off ice cream brand Brickell’s. Luckily, it’s brilliant. It’s traditionally made with simple ingredients – the roasted strawberry, rhubarb crumble and cinnamon toast flavours that I tried pack a huge flavour punch. And in a neat touch from Rob Gore (part of the Westcombe founders’ family), nationwide delivery is possible thanks to a very cool – literally and metaphorically – recycled denim insulated pack.
