Nobu Portman Square

From Berenjak to Bacàn, here are the best things the CODE team ate this week.

Nobu Portman Square

One of my favourite spots in the world for lunch is Nobu Malibu. It’s hard to beat sitting in the Californian sunshine next to the Pacific enjoying some rock shrimp tempura. The restaurant and hotel group is opening a new site in London next week in Marylebone. To celebrate their opening, the restaurant kindly sent me some sushi and sake to enjoy at home.

Cash & Kari

Cash & Kari

The name is fun, the packaging is stylish but all of that wouldn’t matter if the food wasn’t up to scratch but of course the Hoppers delivery-only spin-off is absolutely superb. Chef Karan Gokani and team have created exactly the kind of food we all want to heat – spicy, zingy dishes and done enough of the prep that finishing each bit is fun, too. A whole marinated chicken with sauces to slather on, plus flaky rotis and coconut-rich sambal was a dream meal – and so much more to explore next time.

Bacàn

Bacàn

As restaurants look to adapt their offerings, Flavio Briatore’s hospitality business has set up a whole new offering for delivery in London. The owner of Crazy Pizza and Sumosan Twiga, has created Virtual de Lux which comprises four virtual restaurants including Peruvian themed Bacàn. My delivery of black cod with lobster mash came, naturally, in a Mercedes SL.

Honest Burgers

Always a fail-safe delivery option, Honest Burgers never fails to disappoint, and the Swiss Cottage special (a Bulgarian burger from head chef Nazife) was no exception to this rule. The classic beef burger patty comes with with a roasted red pepper relish and a generous helping of salty feta, as well as a fried aubergine and bacon, too, as if all the above wasn’t enough. Definitely worth an order if you’re lucky enough to be in the Swiss Cottage branch’s delivery range.

Goila Butter Chicken

Goila Butter Chicken

Chef Saransh Goila lays claim to his butter chicken being the best in the world and, despite having been to India a few times, I’ve never tried it there. Luckily in this year of armchair travel, it’s come to me. Thanks to a collaboration with Carousel, Goila Butter Chicken can be delivered and it is fabulous – intensely flavoured, not too sweet and accompanied by dal makhani, sourdough naan and jeera rice – an order to get on repeat.

Berenjak

Berenjak

I found myself craving some of Berenjak’s black hummus during lockdown and luckily in this day and age we’re fortunate enough to be able to get most things we want, when we want. The Soho restaurant based on the restaurants of Tehran is one of my favourite spots and they now do meal kits. The kebab meal kits are a fun way to reinvent Berenjak at home and if you’ve got an outside space at home be sure to get one of their mangal kits to cook over.

Manjit's Kitchen

Manjit’s Kitchen

Manjit’s Kitchen is a local Leeds favourite but has deservedly garnered national recognition when it won the BBC Food & Farming award for best streetfood/takeaway in 2018. Through ever-changing restrictions Manjit and her team have been tirelessly juggling delivery, collection and at-home offerings across their Leeds Market café and Kirkstall Road restaurant, keeping their customers fed and happy. This week a car picnic of chili paneer naan, masala dosa and onion bhajis brightened up another grey day of lockdown.
