With restaurants closed for an indefinite period yet again, there’s no reason we can’t still enjoy restaurant quality food. Here the CODE team shares their favourite at-home kits and takeaways for you to try during lockdown.
Angelina have listened to our prayers and their takeaway is back, meaning you can enjoy their epic 8 course tasting menu from your sofa in your pjs (the luxury!). Everything is delivered completely ready to eat, so there’s no faffing around with garnishes or sauces. The sausage and unagi risotto was heaven, as was the sourdough focaccia with tuna nduja, but the black sesame panna cotta deserves a shout-out too. Angelina deliver within 2.5 miles of their restaurant (East London residents rejoice), but the menu is available for collection, too.

Having been out of the London loop since March, at-home kits have been a saving grace to support the industry and enjoy food from my favourite restaurants. Choosing one is an almost impossible task, but for its ability to combine all of my favourite things, Dirty Vegan’s ultimate vegan kit has to be a highlight – it is Veganuary after all. The beyond meat burger topped with relish, red onion and pickled gherkin is so good even avid meat eaters genuinely wouldn’t notice the difference, the cookies from Vida Bakery are the perfect balance between gooey and crunchy and there’s even a cocktail and drinks on the side. I hope this kit is for life, and not just for January.

I am not going to go so far as saying I will never have a takeaway ever again, but I have frankly had too many lukewarm, slightly squished disappointments over lockdown to leave me reaching for Deliveroo any time soon. Thank goodness for restaurant meal kits… My favourite of lockdown (so far…) has to be Kolamba at Home. The Ceylon chicken curry feast filled the house with the most amazing smells of Sri Lanka and was on the table 10 minutes after it arrived through the door. Highlights included, well, all of it – beetroot curry was a welcome first for me, and I could quite happily have tucked into a whole tub of their toasted pol sambol.

Lockdowns have called for finding new ways to recreate the social aspect of eating meals – especially for those of us who live alone. A long-time fan of Sambal Shiok, and desperately missing the bustle of the Holloway Road laksa bar, I ‘hosted’ a laska zoom party with a bunch of friends. Mandy and her team were helpful with our ordering queries via Instagram and made sure we all got our deliveries at the same time. The Special laksas came perfectly packed with easy-to-follow reheating and assembly instructions. As expected, the giant prawns – juicy and fresh as ever, chicken – perfectly poached, and the signature coconut shrimp broth was creamywith just the right amount of heat – the warm hug we all needed! A firm lockdown favourite for me!

Fish and chips is almost always good, but when you find a reallllly good one it’s almost unbeatable. The Frying Machine is a converted horsebox turned food truck that completes a small circuit of Somerset every week, parking up at a different village each night. Not only does the idea of a mobile chippy practically arriving to the door bring huge excitement to our uneventful lockdown lives, but the nostalgia of old-school battered fish, chunky chips and mushy peas works as the perfect antidote to all the current doom and gloom.
